Gently, and it will outlast most of your wardrobe. A mulmul cotton saree actually improves with washing – the fibres relax and the drape turns buttery.

Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent for the first two or three washes, since natural dyes can release a little colour at first. After that, a gentle machine cycle inside a mesh bag is fine.

Dry in shade rather than harsh sun, and iron on medium while the saree is still slightly damp for that crisp-soft finish. Store it folded on a shelf, refolding along new lines every few months.
